Dubai Flooded After Record Rainfall

Unprecedented Downpour Inundates Emirate

April 16, 2024

Torrential rains have caused widespread flooding in Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates. The storm, which began on Wednesday evening, has dumped over a year's worth of rain on the city in just a few hours. The deluge has caused widespread flooding, stranding motorists and disrupting transportation.

According to the Dubai Municipality, the city received 23 centimetres (9 inches) of rain in the six hours between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. This is the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in Dubai in such a short period of time.

The flooding has caused major traffic disruptions, with many roads impassable. Several vehicles have been swept away by the floodwaters, and there have been reports of people being trapped in their homes.

The storm is expected to continue for several more hours, and the National Center of Meteorology has issued a red weather alert for Dubai and the surrounding areas. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The flooding in Dubai is the latest in a series of extreme weather events that have hit the United Arab Emirates in recent years. In 2022, the country was hit by a severe cyclone that caused widespread damage.

The increasing frequency and severity of these extreme weather events is a reminder of the growing threat posed by climate change. The United Arab Emirates is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change, and the government is taking steps to adapt to the changing climate.
